Flags in the News: New Flag for Orlando

CityFountainFlag-300x200

The city of Orlando, Florida turned 142 years old last month and instead of the usual books or gift cards, it got a brand new flag!

Following a open design competition held earlier this year, a panel of volunteers (with a few “experts” sprinkled in) chose 10 final designs that were then put to a public vote. The winning flag underwent a facelift before it was adopted, as some thought the original design resembled a whale diving in the water. The whole process of picking a new flag — including a video, rules, and the final 10, can be seen here.

OMG, all I can see is the whale now.

The flag depicts the fountain at Lake Eola Park which, according to the City of Orlando website, “is the most distinctive and recognizable symbol in the city, one that is loved by our residents and enjoyed by our visitors.” That having been said, the city can’t be bothered to tell you the name of their beloved fountain, but I will: it’s the Linton E. Allen Memorial Fountain.

Artist’s depiction of Linton E. Allen with his fountain. And a swan boat. And a building that says GAY.

I don’t know what units are used to measure symbolism, but it’s safe to say this new flag has a shit-ton of them:

  • The water ascending from the fountain represents the continuous flow of energy and innovation that makes Orlando a city on the rise.
  • The six equal segments on the base of the fountain embody the city’s six commission districts.
  • The iconic fountain is surrounded by the letter “O”, which symbolizes Orlando’s unity, connectivity and timelessness.
  • The color yellow represents the sunshine, hope and happiness that thrive in our great city.
  • The reflection of the “O” in the water symbolizes our careful consideration of our past and our bold vision for the future.
  • The flag is set on a two-toned background of blue and white representing patriotism, perseverance and peace.

For the zero people still awake and reading this, you’re in for a treat: a look at the former flag of Orlando:

Jesus, what a shitshow.

Fuck this noise. That has got to be in the top 10 worst municipal flags. (And apparently those buildings are just filler — they aren’t even based on anything that exists in Orlando!) Just truly awful, hellish stuff.

As for the new flag, I like it well enough. I’m not sure about basing a flag around a fountain that you can’t even tell me the goddamn name of but hey, if you say it’s the “most distinctive and recognizable symbol in the city” then…you do you, Orlando. And anything would be better than that previous tire fire of flag.
